About George Lian, M.D.
I am an Orthopaedic Surgeon with a practice in Sacramento, California. I have a special interest in treating Foot and Ankle problems.
My goal is to help you to understand your problem, and advise you about the treatment options. There are often different ways to treat orthopaedic injuries and conditions. My job is to determine what is bothering you the most, define what your problem is, and explain to you the benefits and consequences of the different treatment options. Together, we can decide what will be the best treatment plan, and then proceed with that.
I am the son of first generation Norwegian parents who grew up in Canada and Minnesota. I was born in Los Angeles, California.
I graduated from Tahoe-Truckee High School in Truckee, California in 1972. I then attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado. I graduated with a degree in Molecular Biology and Chemistry. Following that I went to Medical School at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, receiving my M.D. degree in 1983. From 1983 through 1989 I was at UCLA Center for Health Sciences doing a Surgery Internship, followed by an Orthopaedic Surgery Residency, and then a one-year Fellowship in Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle surgery.
I came to Sacramento in 1989 and have been in private practice since then.
My Life in 6 Words: "Up to my Neck in Feet"
Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon
An Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Specialist takes care of bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, tendons, nerves, skin and nails in the leg, ankle and foot. As a surgeon, I often provide operative treatment for these problem areas. However, surgery is rarely the only treatment, and often is not the best treatment for your problem. An Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle surgeon is qualified to evaluate your particular problem, and decide with you what the most appropriate treatment for that problem should be.
Orthopaedic Surgery
As an Orthopaedic Surgeon I perform operations in both the hospital and ambulatory surgical center settings. To maintain my hospital privileges I must provide emergency room coverage as an Orthopaedic Surgeon. Several days each month I will be the "on-call" Orthopaedic Surgeon for the emergency room at Sutter General Hospital, Sutter Memorial Hospital, or Mercy General Hospital. On those days I will treat patients with general orthopaedic problems who are seen in those emergency rooms.
Teaching
I work in a teaching capacity at UC Davis Medical Center. For various times over the past 25 years I have been the only Foot and Ankle specialist on the staff of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UC Davis Medical Center. I now work there one day per week (Tuesdays) doing surgery and teaching, and generally assisting Dr. Eric Giza who is the director of the Foot and Ankle service. I will occasionally have one of the Resident Orthopaedic surgeons assist me when I perform surgery at Sutter General Hospital, Mercy General Hospital, or at the Sutter Alhambra Surgery Center.
